Beginning of the Grimaldi Dynasty in Sicily
Enrico Grimaldi is appointed prince by King Martin of Aragon in Palermo. The Grimaldi family acquires the principalities of S. Caterina and Grimaldi and other territories.
1412
Enrico's Descendants
Girolamo Grimaldi, Enrico's son, becomes a prominent general of the Italian Revolution. The Grimaldi dynasty grows and consolidates its influence.
1297-1357
Beginning of Rule in Monaco
Francesco Grimaldi captures the fortress of Monaco in 1297. Charles I recaptures Monaco and secures control over Menton and Roquebrune.
1489
Recognition of Monaco's Independence
Lambert Grimaldi secures Monaco's independence through diplomatic skills. He becomes the first official prince of Monaco.
1525-1641
Spanish Protectorate and End
Monaco signs a protection treaty with Spain. In 1641, Monaco ends the Spanish protectorate and becomes independent under French protection.
1612-1814
Flourishing and the French Revolution
Honoré II leads Monaco to a period of prosperity and secures independence. During the French Revolution, Monaco is annexed, but its independence is restored in 1814.
1815-1861
Independence and Territorial Cession
Monaco is placed under the protection of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1815. In 1861, Monaco cedes Menton and Roquebrune to France and gains full sovereignty.
1861-Present
Economic Prosperity and Modern Developments
Under Charles III, Monaco becomes a luxurious destination with economic prosperity. In 2012, Edmond de Grimaldi and his heirs establish the company Grimaldi & Cie in Macau to forge global alliances.
